Russula polychroma Sing. ex Hora (R. integra of many authors.) Brauner Ledertäubling. Cap large, 5–15cm across, strongly convex, later flattening, blood coloured, livid red, pale to dark wine-coloured, umber or sepia, often with browner to buff centre, firm, fleshy, half-peeling, sticky when moist; margin finally furrowed. Stem 30–90 x 15–30mm, white, browning, firm. Flesh white. Taste mild. Gills almost free, saffron. Spore print ochre (G–H). Spores ovoid with isolated spines, no lines, 9–11 x 7–9.5µ. Cap hyphae finely tapering, some with granules staining in fuchsin. Cap cystidia numerous, cylindrical or narrow club-shaped, without septa, moderately reacting with SV. Habitat under conifers. Season late summer to autumn. Occasional in the Scottish Highlands. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.)
